Support the Transparency Ordinance at City Council

Monday, February 2nd, 6:45 PM - 9:00 PM

Muncie City Hall 300 N High St, Muncie, IN

A filing error last fall sparked a broad fight over transparency in Muncie city government. After the mayor’s office submitted a resolution using Councilperson Dale Basham’s signature without his knowledge, Councilperson Nora Powell introduced an ordinance to ensure only council members or legal counsel could file legislation. That proposal failed on a party‑line vote, prompting Powell to warn that rejecting it signaled a disregard for transparency and proper procedure. A revised version was introduced in January and the final vote is expected February 2nd.

This decision will shape how accountable our local government is. Your support could make the difference.

Public Housing: The Unsung Hero of Deep Affordability and How It Can Be Better

On September 5th, the Muncie Land Bank hosted First Friday at MadJax, featuring a powerful presentation by Amber Skoby and Cayla Mahoney-Potter. Titled Public Housing: The Unsung Hero of Deep Affordability and How It Can Be Better, their talk explored how Public Housing Authorities (PHAs) are revitalizing their portfolios through strategic repositioning — including demolition, disposition, rehabilitation, and new construction.

They traced the roots of deeply affordable housing’s current challenges and highlighted how PHAs and their partners are preserving affordability for future generations by creatively financing improvements and reimagining operational outcomes.

Beyond The Bin: Rethinking & Addressing Plastic Waste

The proliferation of microplastics all around us is quickly becoming a health crisis for humans and our environment. In Indiana, these tiny pieces of plastic pollute our waterways, our food supply, our bodies, and our roads -- and the risks they pose are anything but tiny.

Hear from speakers Dr. Linda Wang, Dr. Julie Peller, Harshini Ratnayaka, and moderator Dr. Maria Iturbide-Chang, who provide a comprehensive overview of the critical aspects of microplastic pollution and what Hoosiers can do to address the challenge.

Presented by Hoosier Environmental Council, the Plastic Reduction Alliance of Northwest Indiana, and Save the Dunes on 9/23/25.

Social Media Working Group

Love sharing ideas, crafting posts, or sparking conversations online? The Social Media Working Group is where passion meets pixels. We’re the team that keeps our movement visible and vibrant on Facebook, Instagram, and Bluesky—spreading the word about upcoming events, celebrating our wins, and inviting our community to take action. When something’s happening, we want to be the first to amplify it. Whether it’s a teach-in, protest, or urgent call to organize, our posts help turn awareness into action. We’re looking for people who want to create original content (short videos, graphics, or TikToks) as well as those who simply want to help amplify our message by sharing posts and engaging with others online. If you enjoy connecting people through stories, images, or words, this is the place for you. Join us to help shape the voice of Muncie Resists and keep our community informed, inspired, and ready to act.

Engagement Working Group

Every member of Muncie Resists needs to feel welcome and needed, becausethey are! The Engagement Working Group works to be sure that all members know who to contact when they have questions, inspires members to participate in events, and helps members understand how to turn their skills and passion for our values into action. We call it an engagement ladder as members progress from attending a few meetings to actively working within the group and maybe even running for an office. If you like reaching out to people, learning about theipriorities and their skills, and figuring out how they’d like to participate then the Engagement Working Group is for you!

Observers Working Group

To work best, democracy needs to happen out in the open. And changing the direction of Delaware County starts with awareness. The Observers Working Group is at the forefront of this effort. We attend and report on City and County elected and appointed meeting groups from County Commissioners and City Council to the Board of Health and Drainage Board. They all matter. We are looking for volunteers who are curious, committed to fairness, and willing to take notes and share updates. You do not need special training.

Observers complete brief reports and create calls to action when an issue arises. Be a part of creating a more equitable county with equal opportunity for every member by joining the Observers Working Group.

Craftivism Working Group

The Craftivism Working Group brings energy and color to our resistance. We host creative gatherings where members make visual art that uplifts, educates, and inspires. These works might become protest posters, invitations to action, or messages to elected officials. Artists and non-artists alike are welcome. We provide the supplies and a fun, supportive space. If you enjoy working with your hands and using art to make a statement, come be part of this creative community.

Event Planning Working Group

Muncie Resists conducts events big and small, routine and “pop-up” throughout a calendar year. Monthly Around Town Events, our annual Winter Open House,Member Meeting and Kick Off events, and various special events throughout the year all require planning. As a member of the Event Planning Working Group you’ll work with other team members and the MR leadership team to plan, host and conduct our events. Signing up for the Event Planning Working Group will put you on a list of members we’ll contact for our events. Whether you can help with one event or many events, please let us know if party planning is your middle name.

Electoral Politics Working Group

If you believe democracy works best when everyone shows up, this is your team. The Electoral Politics Working Group leads our efforts to get out the vote and hosts our Primary Speakers Panel, where voters can hear directly from candidates at the local, state, and federal level. We also coordinate our candidate endorsement process to support those who share our commitment to justice, equity, and inclusion. From canvassing to voter education, this group turns civic engagement into real impact. Whether you’re passionate about strategy, organization, or simply making sure every vote counts, we’d love to have you on the team that keeps democracy moving forward.

Safety Working Group

The Safety Working Group ensures that our events remain peaceful and organized.

Safety Marshals observe, communicate concerns, and help defuse any tension that arises. They use tools such as radios and group messaging to stay alert and coordinate with others.

We provide training on how to spot issues, communicate effectively, and manage safety concerns without escalating situations. This role is especially suited for volunteers who prefer to serve quietly from the edge of a crowd rather than being on the front lines.

If you want to protect your community and help ensure that activism stays safe and accessible, this is the group for you.
